DIARY OF A NOBODY

If it hadn’t already been dreamed up, I might have coined it for my own story. I was once asked to leave an acting / playwriting class, after offering a sincerely but apparently too negatively skewed critique of a work-in-process. The facilitator eyed me up and down like I’d just slipped cyanide into her apple sauce: “Who are you? You’re nobody!” Apparently, fame is the spur to have your opinions taken seriously. Which is their opinion.

I never wanted to be somebody else. I never felt like anybody else. Never vain enough to think I might speak for everybody else. “Simplify! Simplify!” was a mantra I embraced even before I’d ever heard of Thoreau. To rise in the morning with breath on your lips was purpose enough. Anything else but a matter of opinion.

p.s. I still believe it was a sound critique those actors/ writers might wish to take into consideration.
